CHINA PAINT ANOTHER WAY:
Graphic Techniques in China Painting
with Ilona Romule
February 5 -11, 2017
Explore the story within—give that story voice…  Spend a week creating entirely unique paintings on porcelain with Latvian Artist, Ilona Romule, internationally known for her graphic techniques in China Painting.
There is much to cover, be prepared to work!  Beginning with traditional overglaze painting techniques-- brushstrokes, watercolor and more—participants will familiarize themselves with the materials before moving on to Ilona’s signature approach: applying drawing onto the porcelain, mixing colors for various applications, lines, dotting, crosshatching, etc.  Participants will also be introduced to contemporary or “effect” techniques, including the use of latex resist for lusters, scratching or Sgraffito, applying decals, sponging, fingertip painting, relief paste dotting, and sugar water technique under lusters. While the technical aspects will be amply illuminated, the true focus will be on the deeply individual matter of allowing China Painting to reveal one’s own story.

Open to all level of experience and artists of various media (ceramics, painting, drawing, graphic art).  Porcelain pieces for painting will be provided by Gaya Ceramic.
