The Essence of Crystalline: Forms, Formulas, Firing
with Ginny Conrow

July 7-20, 2019

Swoon into the flowery blooms of a crystalline glaze and come home with all the detailed notes in hand on how to make the magic happen in your own studio.  With a lifetime of experience in clay, crystalline glaze expert, Ginny Conrow, will lead this two-week immersion into all the minutiae of the crystalline process.  Beginning with finding the most suitable forms to carry the glaze, participants will be guided in throwing, altering, trimming and hand-building to suit.  Then the alchemy will be completely unveiled with a rigorous break-down of everything from glaze formulation, to choices of brushed or sprayed application, and firing in either oxidation or reduction.  Finally, essential attention will be paid to the post-firing finishing of the works: removal of pedestals, etching, and striking.  No detail will be omitted, though of course, some alchemy will still remain: the gorgeous spontaneity of crystal formations within the layers of the glaze itself…  Get ready for big ahhhhhhs!
This 2-week workshop will focus on the magic of crystalline firing: the glazes, firing schedules and effects that make each kiln opening an exciting surprise! While the workshop will focus on firings, both oxidation and reduction as well as post fire effects, we’ll also explore the particular qualities of porcelain, stretching, altering, joining, and cutting the clay using both throwing and handbuilding to create pieces that accentuate the crystalline glazes. This workshop is suitable for all levels of throwing abilities and all levels of glaze work.

Strange Encounters: Figuration and Narrative in Clay
with Alessandro Gallo

9-22 June, 2019

Alessandro Gallo will share his formidable sculpting process from hand building a figure to painting it realistically after it is fired.  Throughout the immersive two weeks every participant will be encouraged to work on two specific projects.
As the ideal point of departure, participants will begin with an animal mask or a replication of an object at hand (a shoe, bag, cloth, fruit and so on, that can be next to the sculpture at all times for reference).  This piece will be fired during the middle of the workshop and will provide a ‘canvas’ for painting and finishing practice during the last three days. Following this initial “diving deep,” the focus will shift to a more challenging piece that will be more specific to each individual.  Encouraging self tailored projects and offering instruction, demos and suggestions at all times on decision-making regarding approach, Alessandro will tutor each stage of the process, reinforcing concepts from the first three days, while all the while delving deeper, asking for more.  Detailed, thorough, and generous, this workshop will take participants beyond their own expectations of themselves in finding their ceramic voice in figurative narration.

The workshop will cover all topics involved with each stage and all precautions in between:
-  Concept and narrative
-  Reference preparation
-  Hand building solid using a pipe armature.
-  Roughing in clay, identifying main shapes, planes and volumes
-  Defining progressively the piece in all its parts

5-18 MAY 2019 FINDING THE BEAUTY IN IMPERFECTION with Akira Satake

email us at gayacac@gayaceramic.com for more details!

FINDING the BEAUTY in IMPERFECTION
with Akira Satake
May 5-18, 2019
Sharing the secrets employed in many of his most well-known and admired works Japanese potter/artist/musician Akira Satake will lead a hands-on workshop involving both the hand-building and throwing techniques he uses in the making of his tea ceremony bowls, tea pots, water jars, ikebana vases and sculptural objects. Participants will learn to create rich surfaces inspired by the natural world and will experience brushing kohiki slip on clay slabs and stretching the slabs to crack and distort the surfaces, applying a coating of clay mixed with sand onto the surface of wheel thrown pieces and then altering them, and mixing air and other materials into the clay body and then tearing off the clay and/or cutting with a wire to create shapes-- among a myriad of other techniques.
Akira will likewise share his deep experience and knowledge in an on-going discussion of the Japanese aesthetic throughout the two weeks together. Participants will gain insight in finding the beauty in imperfection, the meaning of "wabi-sabi", and the importance of "ma" -- the space in between.
